Tutorial Programme

Every student in the College is a member of a tutor group and participates in the College’s Tutorial Programme, which takes place during timetabled tutorial lessons once per week.

The Tutorial Programme has been developed to meet the needs of students in preparing them for the worlds of higher education, employment and life beyond college. A central part of the programme is the opportunity to review progress and conduct action planning on a 1 to 1 basis with a personal tutor.

We hope students will play a full part in discussion of a wide range of relevant issues. Students’ contributions to the programme are very welcome, including comments on its success in covering topics which they feel are relevant to them.

If you have any questions, comments or feedback relating to the Tutorial Programme, please contact enquiries@colchsfc.ac.uk FAO Lauren Humbles or Sarah Prince.

Tutorial Programme Key Themes

The pastoral curriculum is centred around the following key themes:

  • Vision and progression beyond college; the delivery of advice, guidance and support relating to students’ next steps beyond college including education, training and employment locally, nationally and internationally. Vision and target-setting themes support student success at college and the raising of aspirations for all students.
  • Health and wellbeing; students receive advice, guidance and education around looking after their health and wellbeing in the present and in their future as adults including Relationships, Sex and Health Education.
  • Safety; guidance, support and education for young people around keeping themselves safe at college and beyond.
  • Study skills; advice and guidance to support student success at college relating to revision, independent study, organisational systems and classroom engagement.
  • Global citizenship; opportunities to explore, engage with, learn about and formulate ideas on local, national and international issues, developing individual voice and skills in active participation as citizens.

Relationships, Sex and Health Education

The College is committed to providing high‑quality, relevant and supportive Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) as an essential part of our students’ personal development. RSHE is delivered primarily through the Tutorial programme, complemented by activities and events during our Health and Wellbeing Awareness Week and sessions led by a range of external visitors and specialists.

We work closely with the Essex Sexual Health Service who provide training to staff delivering the materials and support the creation of resources. For more information, see their Parent and Carers platform here https://essexsexualhealthservice.org.uk/parents-and-carers/

Our provision covers a range of issues that we feel are relevant and appropriate to our young people, including;

  • Healthy and unhealthy relationships – sexual, romantic, friendships, acquaintances, healthy and unhealthy, conflict in relationships
  • Gender and power in relationships – gender inequality, coercion and control, men’s mental health, domestic violence, sexual assault
  • Consent and pornography – consent, how to ask for consent, violence in pornography, pornography addiction, AI and deepfakes
  • Relationship with the self – body image, self-esteem, self-image, sexual health, contraception, cervical screening, body checks, sexual health services, AI and deepfakes
