Colchester Students Return from Successful German Exchange

Eight students from Colchester Sixth Form College have returned from a successful exchange visit to Biberach an der Riss in southern Germany, strengthening international friendships and gaining valuable cultural and language experience.
The visit completed the second stage of the college's exchange programme with the Pestalozzi Gymnasium. Earlier this year, German students travelled to Colchester, where they were welcomed and hosted by local families. During the return visit, Colchester students stayed with host families in Germany, giving them the opportunity to immerse themselves in everyday German life and practise their language skills in an authentic setting.
The exchange centred on the theme of Belonging, with students from both countries working together on a joint project exploring identity, community and what it means to feel connected to a place and its people.
Alongside the academic programme, students enjoyed a range of cultural visits and excursions. Highlights included exploring the Lake Constance region, one of Europe's most scenic areas, and a trip into neighbouring Austria. These visits gave students a broader understanding of German-speaking Europe and the diverse cultures, histories and landscapes that shape the region.
The impact of the experience was clear, with one student describing it as "the best week of my life."
The exchange was made possible through funding from UK-German Connection, which supports partnerships between schools and colleges in the United Kingdom and Germany.
Chrissie Maibaum, German teacher at Colchester Sixth Form College, said:
"This exchange gave our students a fantastic opportunity to develop their language skills, experience life in another country and build lasting friendships. Visiting places such as Lake Constance and Austria added another dimension to the programme, helping students to appreciate the wider cultural landscape of the German-speaking world. We are grateful to UK-German Connection and our colleagues at the Pestalozzi Gymnasium for making such a valuable experience possible."
The college hopes to continue its successful partnership with the Pestalozzi Gymnasium, providing future students with the chance to broaden their horizons through international collaboration and cultural exchange.
