The Addams Family musical

The Sixth Form College Colchester Performing Arts Department had audiences screaming with delight as they staged a highly successful three‑night run of The Addams Family just before half term, showcasing one of the College’s largest casts in recent years. The production brought together students from across Drama, Dance, Performing Arts, Music and indeed the College as a whole, creating a confident, energetic performance that played to a sold‑out full house each evening.

Staff highlighted the cast’s commitment, teamwork and professionalism throughout the rehearsal process. Principal Jo Cadman praised the production, saying:

“Our students created something truly magical—darkly magical, of course—filled with energy, humour, and extraordinary talent. The scale of the work involved was astonishing, and the skill and enthusiasm on display would not be out of place in a professional theatre. I could not be more proud.”

Behind the scenes, the scale of the student contribution was equally impressive. Student George Bennett oversaw the full costume design and coordination for the entire cast—nearly forty performers—delivering a visually striking wardrobe that brought the show’s characters vividly to life.

The College’s 14‑piece band played a pivotal role, providing a rich musical foundation that elevated every scene, as did the choral ensemble, overseen by choral director Jo Tyne. Their precision and energy underpinned the whole production and contributed enormously to the show’s professional feel.

Student Stage Manager Emerald Bament ensured the production ran seamlessly from start to finish, managing a complex set, scene transitions, props, cast movement and backstage operations. Their calm leadership was instrumental in delivering such a polished performance.

Hanna Sutherland, the show’s musical director and co-producer, said:

“This cast and crew were extraordinary. Their creativity, their commitment, and their sheer joy in performing made this production a privilege to work on. Every single student involved brought something special.”

Director and co-producer Fiona Bush, and her co-director Ed Roles added:

“The teamwork on display—onstage, backstage and in the band—was exceptional. The professionalism of our students continually amazes us, and this year’s production was a shining example of what they can achieve together.”

Audience members praised the high production values, the impressive set, and the smooth coordination between cast, musicians and backstage crew. The excellent ensemble work and strong character performances made the show a standout moment in the College’s strong creative calendar.

The Sixth Form College, Colchester continues to champion a wide range of performance opportunities, and the success of The Addams Family further reinforces the depth of talent and commitment among its students and staff.
