GCSE Biology
This is one year course that provides students who have not already achieved a grade 4 in a Science GCSE with the opportunity to achieve a grade 4 or 5 at Foundation level GCSE Biology.
The GCSE Biology course offers students a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental principles of biological science and how these concepts relate to the real world. It explores the structure and function of living organisms, starting at the cellular level and progressing through to the complexity of organ systems and ecosystems. Students learn about the processes essential to life, such as respiration, photosynthesis, and reproduction, and how these are influenced by genetic and environmental factors.
A strong emphasis is placed on developing scientific thinking and practical skills. Through required practicals, students investigate key processes and learn to collect, analyse, and evaluate data, fostering critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. Topics such as health and disease, bioenergetics, inheritance, evolution, and ecology enable students to consider current issues in biology, including antibiotic resistance, genetic engineering, conservation, and the impact of human activity on the environment.
The course also highlights the interdependence of organisms and how they adapt to their environments. Students examine the role of biodiversity and the importance of maintaining balanced ecosystems. Alongside content knowledge, students develop competence in mathematical skills, data handling, and scientific communication.
