Stratford upon Avon English Dept trip

By Graham Rayner, Assistant Principal, 17 June 2016

25 AS, A-Level and IB students have just returned from the English Department’s annual trip to Stratford-upon-Avon which was a great success.  Students’ enthusiasm didn’t flag despite a relentless Shakespeare-related schedule of houses and performances.   English teacher Alison Shelley said, “This year we saw Shakespeare’s most famous play, Hamlet, and least performed, Cymbeline, in the main Royal Shakespeare Theatre.  The trip ended with a very powerful interpretation of Christopher Marlowe’s Dr Faustus in the smaller Swan Theatre, where which of the actors plays which main part (Faustus or Mephostophilis) is decided by the striking of a match at the start of the performance. For many the high point remains the Behind the Scenes tour, when in small groups students are taken round all areas backstage from wigs to actors’ dressing rooms, with gossip on the cast if they were lucky!”
