Product Design: Graphics (usually referred to as just Graphics) is part of the Technology department alongside Product Design: Technology, Food Technology and Textiles. It is possibly the largest A Level Graphics department in the country. The Graphics staff are passionate about the subject, having a wealth of experience with strong established links with the Edexcel exam board. Many of our students go on to study a variety of Design based courses at university and we pride ourselves on preparing students to study the subject successfully beyond A Level. Here you will find plenty of information about the course and how it is taught at The Sixth Form College Colchester. You will also find examples of student’s work and students’ thoughts about the subject.
What is Product Design: Graphics?
The Product Design: Graphics course (usually referred to as Graphics) offered at The Sixth Form College provides students with the opportunity to develop an understanding of the principles of design and the role of the designer in society. It is closely related to GCSE Graphics and Resistant Materials, but at the same time introduce students’ to many new aspects of design and manufacture that are not covered at GCSE.
All Product Design: Graphics students spend time investigating and analysing commercial products. Students are required to develop designs for products and also manufacture products in the College workshop. Alongside these coursework tasks, students will study the use of commercial materials, processes and technologies in the manufacturing of products in the real world.
How is Product Design: Graphics different to Product Design: Technology?
Within the Product Design course structure, Graphics students will focus more on the visual aesthetic of products and their design. Areas covered include styling, advertising and packaging. Technology students will focus more on the functional aspect of product design. They will look at mechanisms, gearings, fixings and more industrial manufacturing methods.
