SUFFOCATION - DESPISE THE SUN

***

Suffocation were formed in 1990 in the United States, and in that time they seem to have built up a very good reputation. So what do I think of them? I ordered this EP on the basis of recommendation, without knowing what they sounded like. A bit of a gamble perhaps, but it was no loss on my part.

Below I have evaluated a few of the tracks from this 5 track EP...

Funeral Inception This is the opening track, and after a spoken intro, a speedy and very heavy guitar driven section enters. The drums are very enjoyable, as are the guitars - both very fast but fitting together well. Some nice riffs going on in the background during the vocals. Later the track slows up a bit, into a very 'chuggy' section. This track includes various pauses where the riff changes, which adds interest. A good solid track.

Despise the SunStraight into action again here for the title track. The guitar tone on this record is very muddy and heavily distorted, which I like a lot. I find this track (and all of them) quite similar in many ways to all the others - speedy drums and heavily distorted guitars. None the less, there are again some very nice riffs going on in this track and the drums are really pulling the song forward very well. Nice and brutal!

Catatonia This is my favourite track on the record. I find it more interesting than the others, as it includes some particularly enjoyable vocals - brutal and interesting. A great guitar solo also adds to this track a lot. Again, this track is not very different from the others in places, but I think this one stands out the most. I personally hear a Slayer influence in this track in particular. The drums again are very fast and impressive. This therefore brings to a close an impressive 5 track EP.

All in all then, I've found this record to be a solid collection of unrelenting tracks, although I feel that there is not a great deal of difference between each track. I also think that I might tire of this record if I listened to it regularly, as it is pretty straightforward (although very enjoyable) death metal.

Definitely worth the purchase though in my opinion.
