IRON MAIDEN - DANCE OF DEATH
****
Reading information about
this album prior to its release, I was excited to find out whether some of the
good comments were true. I’m happy to say that they were, and that Iron Maiden
have released one of their best (if not their best) studio albums since 1988’s
Seventh Son of a Seventh Son. I have chosen a selection of three tracks
to evaluate…
Dance of Death – The title track of the album, and one that is quite slow brewing. An acoustic intro bears strong similarities to various other Maiden tracks (The Clansman being one of them), and the song later opens up into a longer, more guitar-heavy piece. A particularly long and impressive guitar solo section is the highlight of this track, but all in all nothing instantly attention-catching. However, this is the kind of track which I imagine I'll grow to like more and more.
Paschendale – Definitely the highlight of the album for me, this epic ten minute piece is a classic. On a par with such Maiden tracks as Hallowed be thy Name and The Rime of the Ancient Mariner you might argue (though I can't bring myself to praise it with such a comparison!), this track (the brainchild of guitarist Adrian Smith) really is special. I think what stands it apart from many other tracks on this album is the sheer power and scale of it. Incorporating an accompanying orchestra and numerous instrumental guitar sections, this is Iron Maiden at their best.
Face in the Sand – This track follows on from Paschendale, and manages to keep the same powerful feel, even if not on the same level. An acoustic intro section slowly escalates to a powerful, bass drum-driven structure, although it is in a way similar to the track Blood Brothers from their previous studio album. This track is another highlight of the album for me, and definitely one to listen to again and again.
So despite an odd lack of hype for their latest release, Iron Maiden have produced another great album to satisfy their fans and the media alike – reflected in the chart positions (Number 2 in the UK album charts).
With the release of Dance of Death, it seems that Iron Maiden have silenced anyone who claims their time is passed...
UP THE IRONS!
