EXTOL - UNDECEIVED

****

Extol might seem a bit strange for a Norwegian metal band - they're Christians! To be fair though the religious standing of any band shouldn't affect our perceptions of their music, and I find the music itself very interesting. It might be described as progressive death metal, as it is very very technical. The music is unpredictable and quite strange in a way.

This band are obviously very competent musicians, as each song is an impressive display of originality and musical ability. It is quite hard to take in this album in one listen, due to the complexity of each track.

Inferno This is a full-throttle track which has very heavy elements, as well as melodic features, even incorporating a violin in places. There are many interesting time changes and varying sections, which make this a great opening track.

UndeceivedThis track is introduced by a calm string section, and then a really enjoyable heavy section enters. I really like the lyrics in this song, and also the drums - there are constantly interesting things added which make it a lot more interesting. Another thing that I like about this track is the vocals by Peter Espevoll - it is a raspy and yet powerful sound. Some great guitar melodies as well. Probably my favourite track.

Renewal This track seems to mix elements of black and death metal to create a particularly different sound. A 'deathy' section leads into a trebly, blast beat section with very raspy vocals. It then switches back to a heavier more guitar-orientated sound.

This last track really sums up the album and the band I think - interesting, unpredictable and original. A very enjoyable album.
