CHILDREN OF BODOM - FOLLOW THE REAPER

*****

Follow The ReaperChildren of Bodom are a Finnish five-piece band, and their music is somewhat hard to describe. You could look at it as a hybrid of power/speed metal with harsh vocals, but I don't think that really does it justice. They've really created a style of their own, although there are now various similar bands. They make use of fast and melodic guitar and keyboard leads, as well as a good solid dose of heaviness. Their name may sound strange, but it actually derives from the site of a multiple murder in Finland (Lake Bodom).

I was originally hoping to pick up a copy of their acclaimed second full-length - Hatebreeder - but as this was not in stock I went for this one instead. I have not yet heard Hatebreeder, but this album has definitely become one of my favourites, and hopefully the evaluated tracks below give you an idea why...

Children of Decadence A great lead melody opens up this track, followed by a heavier mirror of this riff. This is probably one of the most complex songs on the album, as there are many different sections, all of which create a really anthem-like feel to it. The harsh vocals of guitarist/singer Alexi Laiho compliment the music well in my opinion. It is an interesting combination - power metal-type instrumentation with black/death vocals, but I think it works perfectly. This is an interesting and very memorable track, and one of my favourites on the album. As with all the tracks, the keyboards and guitars work perfectly to create some fantastic melodies.

Every Time I Die This track has a slower, more 'chuggy' feel than others on the album, but it is definitely a highlight. I love the lyrics, and although it seems to be over quite quickly, this song conveys lots of power. There is again a very nice instrumental section - although not as fast or technical as some others, it fits very well.

Kissing the Shadows This track storms right into action with a drum driven intro. This is my favourite track on the album, without question. I feel that in this track in particular the backing keyboards fit perfectly and add an enormous amount to the song. The guitar lines are simply brilliant, and I never get tired of them. This track has a fantastic solo section, which brings this track to a perfect end. Heavenly!

Overall then for me, this album is much deserving of full 5 star status. I never get tired of it, and every track has such an energetic and intense feel to it. Particular credit should go to Alexi Laiho perhaps, for composing and arranging every track, including the fantastic solos. What an album!
