Sociology

Our department is one of the largest in the country, and also incorporates Health and Social Care. We have 9 sociology specialists within the department and between us we have over 119 years teaching experience! In addition, we also have strong links with other departments within the college, particularly with Citizenship.

About the Department

We are a very dynamic department, always looking to keep up-to-date with recent sociological studies and developments. One member of the department is a current examiner for AQA sociology, and another has recently published a sociology teaching guide. We have very good links with Essex University, and provide an opportunity for students to attend a yearly conference where they get a ‘taste’ of university life and what it might be like to study sociology at degree level.

Furthermore, we provide a lot of student support via online resources and taught support sessions which are available throughout the year.

About These Pages

This website contains invaluable information for prospective students and parents as well as current and past students. There are sample documents at all levels as well as links to Moodle, where current students can access teaching materials. Also on this website is an archive of trips and visits, information on textbooks and information on the structure and content of the courses offered within the department.

Trips and Visits

There are a variety of trips and visits run within the department; the very popular annual trip to New York, which usually takes place in February, providing our students with an experience specifically designed for A level and beyond. The department also ran a trip to Istanbul in 2009, which provided a really rich insight into cultural and religious issues, as well as the annual Sociology Conference, organised by the department, which is held at Essex University, including many other local colleges and includes a session by the Chief Examiner for Sociology and many other highly regarded speakers in the field.
