Overseas Students

The College Admissions Policy makes special provision for a small number of places for overseas applicants to be available each year.

The College welcomes the increased diversity gained by having overseas students and an International Students Group has been established to support the smooth transition into a varied and friendly environment.

Most overseas applicants will be applying for a full 2 year course, often with the intention of remaining in the UK for their higher education.

Each year a number of EU students join College for a one year stay before returning home to complete their studies. In exceptional cases we will consider a one term stay but this is considered less satisfactory.

Fees

Fees do not apply if a student and their family have been living in the UK or any other EU country for the last 3 years or if they hold official refugee status.

Current fee level for 2010/11 entry is £5250.00. Fees are payable termly in advance to the College Finance Office. Cheques should be made payable to The Sixth Form College, Colchester.

Bank transfers can of course be arranged. For further details please contact the Finance Office by email at
finance@colchsfc.ac.uk

Accommodation

Finding accommodation is the responsibility of the applicant and their family. The Admissions Office will aim to provide contact details of possible host families but these will need to be assessed by the applicant prior to the start of term.

Breakfast and evening meal with a host family costs approximately £110 per week. Applicants must take into account the cost of transport to and from College if they are living outside of Colchester.

English Support

English as a second language support is available for non fee paying students for whom English is a second language. Fee paying students may wish to make use of this ‘study plus’ support but it would be at an extra cost.

The following extract comes from the guidance notes from UKCOSA:

“Further Education courses in England

Most institutions in England will not charge fees to the following students, if they are on a course funded by the Learning and Skills Council (LSC):

  • People who have lived in England for 3 years before the start of the course, but those here from outside the EEA (European Economic Area) as students are generally excluded from this provision.
  • Asylum seekers in receipt of assistance from the National Asylum Support Service (NASS) or in receipt of any means-tested benefit, or in receipt of voucher/financial assistance from Social Services or who are 16 to 18 years old, unaccompanied and placed in the care of Social Services.
  • People with ‘recently settled’ status. To be included in this group, you must be someone who became settled in the UK less than three years before the start of the course. If you came to the UK to join your husband or wife who is ‘settled’ in the UK, and you have been living in the UK for twelve months, you may also be included in this category.
  • People who have been granted exceptional leave to enter or remain in the UK.
  • In ‘exceptional circumstances’ talk to your institution if you think your case is ‘exceptional’.
  • 16-18 year olds accompanying parents who have permission to stay in the UK.
  • 16-18 year olds who are British Citizens or have the right of abode”.
